The Comparative Effectiveness and Cost-Effectiveness of Brachytherapy in Prostate Cancer
ثبت نشده
چکیده
In a careful examination of the peer-reviewed literature, brachytherapy emerges as the most costeffective treatment for lowto intermediate-risk prostate cancer, providing superior or equivalent effectiveness at lower overall direct costs to the healthcare payer as well as lower indirect costs (e.g., productivity loss) to the patient. Brachytherapy’s lower overall direct and indirect costs are due to its low adverse effect rates and to its convenient, typically one-time, outpatient-based administration.

Brachytherapy for prostate cancer: a systematic review of clinical and cost effectiveness.
OBJECTIVES Brachytherapy is emerging as a new treatment option for prostate cancer, and is increasingly being used in Europe and North America. METHODS A systematic review of studies that compared clinical or cost effectiveness of prostate brachytherapy with radical prostatectomy or external beam radiation for patients with localised prostate cancer. RESULTS No randomised controlled trials ...
متن کاملComparative cost-effectiveness of focal and total salvage 125I brachytherapy for recurrent prostate cancer after primary radiotherapy
PURPOSE Focal salvage (FS) iodine 125 (125I) brachytherapy could be an effective treatment for locally radiorecurrent prostate cancer (PCa). Toxicity is often reduced compared to total salvage (TS) while cancer control can be maintained, which could increase cost-effectiveness. The current study estimates the incremental cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) of FS compared to TS. MATERIA...
متن کاملSystematic review of the cost effectiveness of radiation therapy for prostate cancer from 2003 to 2013.
BACKGROUND Prostate cancer remains a prevalent diagnosis with a spectrum of treatment choices that offer similar oncologic outcomes but differing side effect profiles and associated costs. As the technology for prostate radiation therapy has advanced, its associated costs have escalated, thus making cost-effectiveness analyses critical to assess the value of competing treatment options, includi...
متن کاملThe potential impact of comparative effectiveness research on U.S. health care expenditures.
Comparative effectiveness research (CER) has the potential to slow health care spending growth by focusing resources on health interventions that provide the most value. In this article, we discuss issues surrounding CER and its implementation and apply these methods to a salient clinical example: treatment of prostate cancer. Physicians have several options for treating patients recently diagn...
متن کاملHistorical review of interstitial prostate brachytherapy
In the recent years, interstitial brachytherapy implantation has become the treatment of choice for early stage prostate cancer patients. Treatment of prostate cancer with radiation is traced back to 1909. Originally this treatment modality was very crude and could not gain much popularity till 1982. Advancements in radioactive source designs, introduction of new low energy radioactive sources,...
